Buju Sentence Pushed Back

TAMPA, USA (CMC) — A United States federal judge in Tampa, Florida has pushed back the sentencing date for Jamaican Grammy Award-winning reggae star Buju Banton to June 23.

Banton was originally scheduled to be sentenced on June 16, but federal district Judge James S Moody Jr said, without any explanation, that the reggae artiste will now be sentenced on the new date.

Banton, 37, whose real name is Mark Myrie, faces up to life in prison.

Last month, a 12-member federal jury found him guilty of three cocaine-related charges. The jury found him guilty of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilogrammes or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine.

They also found him guilty of attempting to possess five kilogrammes or more of cocaine, and for “aiding and abetting others in using a communication facility in the commission of a felony”.

The jury, however, did not find him guilty of “knowingly and intentionally possessing a firearm in furtherance of and during the course of a drug-trafficking crime”.

Students and visitors packed the auditorium of University of West Indies since 4pm to get a glance and listen to “Di Teacha”  Vybez Kartel do his presentation entitled, “‘Pretty as a Colouring Book’: My Life and My Art.” Kartel was invited as a guest of the Department of Literatures in English and the Centre for Gender and Development Studies.

Vybez Kartel compares himself to Shakespeare because of his poetic ability, talks about Bob Marley being the rebel of Reggae music and now he is the poster boy for the jamaica tourist board possibly hinting that he wil be the poster boy for Dancehall. He also says that his style of rhyming was a breath of fresh air to dancehall because Dancehall music was getting a bit dull. Di Teacha touches the topic of how the media uses him to sell magazines and papers etc pointing at all the negative that is does instead of acknowledging the positive that he does for the jamaica people. Kartels feel honored to lecture at UWI

Deejay Vybz Kartel is eyeing his guest lecture at the University of the West Indies (UWI) tonight as a good step for not only himself but dancehall music.

The deejay will be creating waves today when he speaks on ‘Pretty as a Colouring Book: My Life and My Art’, at the Undercroft of the Senate Building on the UWI campus. The deejay was invited to lecture by Professor Carolyn Cooper who teaches a course on ‘Reggae Poetry’ in the Department of Literatures in English. The announcement of Kartel’s lecture raised a number of eyebrows on various social networking sites, but the deejay is looking at the opportunity as a positive one.

He told THE STAR recently, “I think it is not only a good step for me, but a great step for dancehall. It shows that at least few of us dancehall artistes have the mental capacity to speak on the music as true ambassadors on a tertiary level and not all of us are ‘duppy bat’ and ‘butu’ like.”

not surprised

According to Kartel, he is honoured to be lecturing at the university and is not surprised by the invitation. “I was not surprised. On the contrary, it was as if I was expecting her invitation. I knew that was gonna be the end product of our back and forth emails,” he said. The deejay boasted that he has finished preparing for the lecture when THE STAR spoke with him earlier in the week.

Russian Detained in Trinidad for disorderly conduct then released

Dancehall Producer Tarik ‘Russian’ Johnston, was held by police at the Piarco International Airport in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad for obscene language and disorderly conduct on Saturday.

Tight lipped administrators at Piarco refused to comment but airport police and other security personnel said that Johnston, 22, had refused a request by a security officer and let off a string of expletives. He was detained but was subsequently released.

Johnston who is known for dancehall rhythms like Go Go Club and Nuh Fear was also involved in another dispute with a security guard at the Digicel Jamaica Consumer Electronics Show in October last year. There he was reported to have disobeyed the officer by walking into a restricted area.

And just last month Johnston was again in the news after he came on to the scene of a mob beating. Police reports say the mob was beating a man who robbed a schoolboy. Johnston fired a shot from his licensed firearm to disperse the crowd but unknown to him, a gunshot was returned by another licensed firearm holder. Johnston then ran, climbed a wall and injured his shoulder.

DJ Assassin say his song Run Di Place is NOT aimed at Kartel. What you think?

Having avoided a clash with Vybz Kartel in 2005, Assassin says his latest song, ‘Run Di Place’, is not in reference to the artiste and he still has no intentions of being in any lyrical confrontation with him.

In the song that was recorded on the weekend and released yesterday, Assassin uttered some lyrics that on the surface seemed to be directed at Vybz Kartel.

The song says: “How dem a gwaan like Assassin caan done the place/ Memba seh a wi have the fire tune dem weh a bun the place/ Oh? A mussi true mi nah bleach out mi face/ And true certain things you caan give mi fi taste/ Mi nah buy di chart dem/ Nah cheat the race/ Wi nah pick up no freaky ways/ Mi nah follow nuh bwoy mi a di boss fi miself/ Is like a big man deh school in a class to miself/ Dem all a seh mi mad so mek mi talk to miself/ But certain things mi nah do fi market miself/ Mi nah put out no freaky photographs wid miself/ The music haffi share, mi tek a part fi miself.”

immoral

However, Assassin said the song is not about any particular artiste. Instead, he said he is voicing his disapproval about many things that he believes are immoral.

“It nuh have nothing fi do wid Kartel. When since Kartel have the monopoly on bleaching?” he questioned.

Assassin said he spoke about bleaching in his song, Hype Up, years ago, but “all of a sudden yuh caan seh bleaching and a nuh Kartel yuh a talk.”
